CHARACTER INFORMATION

NAME: Asami Sato
CANON: The Legend of Korra
CANON REFERENCE: The Avatar Wiki and this is Asami's page. I have yet to find an official canon source, but I read through this page and it’s accurate.
AGE: 18
GENDER: female
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: Year 12
APPEARANCE: Asami in her racing suit, which she also wears for fights. Her Icon page has plenty of shots of her face. Beyond that, Asami is always one to dress her best. She's very into current trends and always puts her best foot forward when she can. Makeup is a near-necessity.
PERSONALITY: (Written according to the AU) At first glance, Asami is a sweet and outgoing person. Her father's over-protectiveness has made her eager to reach out to others, almost desperate. She’s very friendly. However, Asami has difficulty fully connecting with people at this point. After losing the trust of the three most important people in the world to her, she isn’t up for being so close to someone and being betrayed again. It’s going to take her some time to build up her trust.

Her father being the only family she had, Asami was very close to him and refused to accept the charges against him until there was hard evidence against him in front of her own eyes. She was devastated upon discovering her father’s alignment with the anti-mutant group, and hasn’t really had the chance to let those emotions out, yet. Asami is very good at keeping up a happy face, though, and few people would notice that something is wrong. She's trained as a business woman, raised to be a public figure. Because of her recent losses, Asami can be slightly jealous of other people’s relationships. If she has a friend who clearly prefers to spend time with someone else, she’ll become slightly withdrawn and disappointed, maybe try to assert herself a little bit to try to become closer to said friend. She won’t take this frustration out on her friend, though, unless she has a legitimate reason. She recognizes that her thoughts are petty, but doesn't make them go away.

Asami can be very girly, which often leads people to assume that she’s the helpless type, given her privileged upbringing and mild-mannered personality. True, she does have an appreciation for class, always wanting to put her best foot forward physically and in interacting with others. But beneath this, she can handle herself surprisingly well. Asami is highly trained in various forms of self defense, and with the help of her mutation can handle herself in combat with people who would appear to be much more intimidating than she. People are also often surprised to discover her passion for driving. She’s nothing short of an expert, her knowledge of common motorized vehicles rivaling that of a trained mechanic. Driving is Asami’s passion, and her mutation makes her exceptionally good at it. When she feels as if her memories of past wrongs are closing in on her, she will always go for a long drive to run away from it all and clear her mind. Escapism is a major coping method.

Even four years after the appearance of her powers, Asami is still uncomfortable with them. Sometimes, she feels as if it’s her fault that her relationship with her father was ruined. She realizes that this is irrational, but it’s an insecurity that built itself from her father’s constant subtly anti-mutant remarks and undertones. She grew up thinking that being a mutant was a bad thing, and she often feels like something is wrong with her. It’s a sentiment drilled into her head by her father, who at the time didn’t realize what he was doing. It will take a while for her to come to the full conclusion that it’s okay to be a mutant. That it’s not some disease that she needs to cure.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
Asami’s mutation sharpens her eyesight and hearing, and gives her incredible reflexes. This also makes her very sensitive to loud noises and bright lights. These side effects aren’t crippling, as she does fine when driving something that runs loudly, but bright/loud explosions and gunshots can slow her down. Her mutation combined with her martial arts training makes her quick and confusing to fight against. It also makes her an ace behind the wheel.

AU HISTORY:
Asami Sato was born and raised in a life of privilege in New York City, where her father owned a very successful applied technology company. He was the epitome of the American Dream, working his way up from nothing and building a world-renowned business specializing in the transportation industry. His genius led to many breakthroughs in automotives and aeronautics, building him a fortune.

Tragedy struck when she was a little girl, though, and her mother was killed in a break in perpetrated by a mutant gang. Her father Hiroshi was never the same, harboring anti-mutant sentiments since, and enrolling Asami in self defense classes. He was paranoid, not letting his daughter have much of a childhood at all. She lost contact with many of her friends, and didn’t make new ones. Her mutation manifested when she was 14, but she hid it from her father, knowing that he would act betrayed that his daughter was “one of them.” She did everything she could to distract herself from her mother’s death and developed a passion for motorized sports. Asami was a prodigy, her secret mutation making her a perfect operator in even in the most fast-paced scenarios. Most of her free time was spent behind the wheel. She lost a good portion of her interest in romance  when she discovered that her boyfriend was cheating on her with one of her only friends. She cared about both deeply, but it broke her heart and damaged her trusting nature. Romance soon became the least of her worries.

Hiroshi’s extreme views did not come to full light until years after the accident involving her mother. Asami was 18. It was discovered that his company, Future Industries, had been building machinery for an anti-mutant rebellion. Asami managed to get caught up in the raid of her supply site to arrest Hiroshi. Her father invited her to join him in removing the mutants who “killed her mother” from the world, but Asami refused, and revealed that she herself was a mutant. Outraged, her father actually tried to kill her, but mutant reinforcements arrived just in time, and Asami was barely able to escape.

Even in the time before this disturbing reveal, Asami had been spending time with a group of fellow mutants- the only people who knew that she herself was a mutant. They had been making plans to run away from the city for a while, but Asami had thus far been unsure. After her father’s betrayal, she had made up her mind. Catching up with the group at the last minute before their departure, Asami went with them, taking only her motorcycle and what she could fit on it. Asami eventually arrived at The Xavier Institute six months ago alongside Toph, a younger girl who had played a part in convincing her to run away.

During her short time spent at the Institute, Asami made friends and strengthened old bonds, but could not bring herself to heal properly from the loss of her father and life as she knew it. She viewed her running to the Institute as running away from responsibility, and that she was failing herself by shutting out the problems left behind by her father. As summer began to turn to fall, she made a quick and impulsive decision: She needed to grow up. It was time to face what her life had become. Asami left the institute abruptly, taking what few possessions she had with her back to New York City to face what Future Industries had become. And it wasn't good. Her father was still missing, and his company had been spread among shareholders. Business tanked after Hiroshi was revealed as a violent radical, and her home was gone to the banks. Thankfully, her father could not touch what she had saved on her own when he disowned her. She was able to find a cheap apartment and job as a mechanic while staying in New York and trying to contact what was left of Future Industries. Despite the training in business she had received from her father over the years, the company was doomed. Future Industries filed for bankruptcy on Christmas Eve. A girl not completely grown up wasn't nearly enough to pull it back to its feet. Asami all too quickly learned that her decision to "grow up" had been nothing more than a naive and childish mistake.

On New Years Day, she left her apartment and turned her motorcycle back in the direction of Xavier's Institute. Only when she was already on the road did she realize that it was a decision she sad made a long time ago. She couldn't handle being alone in the world. Not yet. She still had doubts about her mutation, about her views, about her life. Unanswered questions. And she knew that the answers were right where she had left them behind four months ago.

SAMPLE

1ST PERSON SAMPLE: Hey, guys! It’s almost the weekend, and I was wondering what you thought about a trip to the race track on Saturday. ;) The weather’s supposed to be gorgeous, and we can see about bringing a picnic lunch. Anyone who doesn’t drive can see about riding shotgun.

Please get back to me by this afternoon so we can set up rides and food.

PS- If anyone sees Toph around, could you ask her about tagging along?

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE:
When she came to this place, she was desperate. She had no house to call a home, no family to love her anymore. The others were running and they told her to run with them, so she ran. They were mutants, misfits cast out by the people they thought they loved, with nothing but each other and what few possessions they carried. She raced out of the city, away from everything she knew, away from the man whom she could no longer call her father.

Her name is Asami Sato, and she now stands by the window of her dormitory at The Xavier Institute of Higher Learning, wondering if it all was some huge mistake.

Asami still struggles, every night as she stares sleeplessly at the ceiling, with the fact that she’s one of them. One of the people who, according to her father, was responsible for her mother’s untimely death. Asami knows that this is ridiculous, that it is by no choice of her own that she is the way she is. It’s all just some horrible coincidence. But she cannot help but wonder if this is really something wrong with her. If she’s a problem that needs to be fixed. Cured.

She hasn’t shared this with anyone. Not even the people whom she has come to call her friends.

The more time she spends here, though, the less these thoughts plague her. Yes. She’s a human being just like her father. Her mother. That’s what she hates the most… All the “mutant and proud” nonsense… Why can’t we all simply be people living together? Why, no one would even notice, speaking with Asami, that she was different. Gifted, as they call it here.

Shaking her head and moving away from the window, Asami grabs her helmet, jacket, and gloves from her bed. A quick drive will clear her mind.
